Strain of the Week: Aug. 2, 2015 (Panama Red)

This week we take a look at the one of the revered classics of cannabis strains.  Panama Red is a sativa landrace whose popularity peaked in the 60’s, gaining notoriety as a household name thanks to the New Riders of the Purple Sage album.  A favorite of California hippies and surfers alike for its unique sativa high, the modern industry has made this proud strain a rarity.  Its tall height and long flowering times, often over 11 weeks, mean it doesn’t fit with the tightly grown, fast flowering greenhouses supplying California dispensaries.

Although typically low in THC numbers, a well harvested Panama Red bud has a barky vanilla and peppery scent.  Known for an energetic high and mellow mood elevation, it is best when used in the early morning through the afternoon.  The cerebral high enhances sensory experiences, making movies, music, and any other stimulation sharper and more enjoyable.  Peaceful, creative, and psychedelic, it is little wonder Panama Red rose to popularity among the bohemian set of the West Coast.
